Natural Remedies for Toothache Pain
A toothache refers to pain in and around the teeth and jaws. Tooth decay, loose or broken fillings, an infection or receding gums can cause it.
If the pain lasts for more than 1 or 2 days, make an appointment with your dentist
immediately to have it treated.

Salt water rinse
For many people, a warm salt water rinse is an effective treatment. Salt
water is a natural disinfectant, and it helps to loosen food particles and
debris lodged in cavities or between teeth. Treating a toothache with salt water can also help reducing
swelling, inflammation and heal any oral wounds.
To use this approach, mix 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and
swish around in the mouth before spitting out for about 30 seconds. Repeat this
process as often as needed.
Cold compress or ice pack
A cold compress or an ice pack may help to ease dental pain, especially
if you’ve a toothache is because of injury or swollen gums.
A person can put the ice pack or a bag of frozen peas against the
outside of the cheek above the painful tooth for a couple of minutes.
This approach constricts the blood vessels and slow the flow of blood to
the affected area. This helps ease the pain and also reduces swelling and inflammation.
Garlic
Garlic has been widely used for medicinal purposes throughout history as
it can provide relief from toothache. It contains a compound called allicin,
which accounts for its powerful antibiotic and other medical properties.
A fresh clove of garlic should first be crushed mix it with table salt,
and the mixture applied directly to the affected tooth for pain relief.
Alternatively, you can try chewing one or two cloves of garlic for relief.
Clove
Clove has been widely used to treat toothaches throughout history as it
contains the oil that can effectively numb pain and reduce inflammation. Cloves
contains eugenol, which has a natural antiseptic property.
To use this approach, dab a small amount of clove oil onto a cotton ball and apply it to the affected tooth
and gums. You can also dilute the clove oil with a few drops of a carrier oil,
like water or olive oil. Do this a few times a day.
You can also add a drop of clove oil to a small glass of water and make
a mouthwash.
Peppermint tea
Like cloves, peppermint tea has numbing properties with nice
flavor that can soothe a toothache. Menthol gives peppermint its minty flavor
and smell is also known for its antibacterial properties.
One teaspoon dried peppermint leaves can be put in 1 cup boiling water
and steeped for 20 minutes. After it cools, it can be swished around in your mouth
then spat it out or swallowed.
Placing a slightly warm wet tea bag can also be used against the
affected tooth for several minutes until the pain lessens.
A few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball can also be placed
against the affected tooth as a temporary relief.
If toothache pain lasts more than 1 or 2 days, make an
appointment with your dentist.
